The route

Overview

A four-pitch bolted route that starts 5 m right of Mavrica življenja, crosses it at the shared first belay and finishes up a corner to the left. The first pitch gives the best and hardest climbing, straight up fine slabs at 6a+, and the second has small Dolomite-style runnels. The upper two pitches ease to 5c and 5b. It is the most amenable of the modern lines in this corner of the face.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

The face stands directly above the Vršič pass road in the Julian Alps; Kranjska Gora is the nearest town. Park at the pass. Sources describe the scree as running straight from the Vršič car park to the foot of the wall. None of the sources read gives bus or parking-fee details.

On foot · about 30 min

From the Vršič pass go straight up to the foot of the south-east face, then right along the wall past Stoletje and Juševa smer (those routes are given 25–30 min). The start is about 5 m right of Mavrica življenja, which itself is about 20 m left of Črni panter.

Getting down

Descent

Abseil. There are 30 m abseil stations down the route for a single 60 m rope. It can also be done on double ropes in two abseils, but for safety the first ascensionist recommends making the second abseil, from the grassy ledge, down the line of Mavrica življenja rather than Rdeča pentlja. He does not say why.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Easy to bail

Yes. There are 30 m abseil stations down the route for a single 60 m rope, and the top belay is set up for abseiling. If you go down on double ropes in two abseils, the first ascensionist says to make the second one, from the grassy ledge, down the Mavrica življenja line for safety.

Retreat from
From any belay on the 30 m stations. R1 is shared with Mavrica življenja; R2 is on a grassy ledge; R3 is semi-hanging.
Carry
1×60 m rope, or 2×60 m for two abseils. Knot the ends: pitch 1 is quoted at 35 m against 30 m stations.
Basis
Part stated, part inferredThe first ascensionist's text on plezanje.net states the 30 m stations and the advice about the second abseil; use from each intermediate belay and the knot warning are inferred.

Safety

Hazards

  • On double ropes, do not make the second abseil from the ledge down Rdeča pentlja itself; the first ascensionist says to use the Mavrica življenja line for safety.
  • Pitches 3 and 4 have 4 and 5 bolts in 20–25 m.
  • The third belay is semi-hanging.
  • The route crosses Mavrica življenja at the first belay and passes close to Juševa smer at the second. Check the topo photo so you follow the correct bolts.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South-east facing, with route altitudes on plezanje.net between about 1,850 and 2,000 m. One area guide notes the face goes into shade after about 14:00, so summer afternoons are cool and spring or autumn give more sun. plezanje.net ascent logs for the face cluster in June to September, with a few in May and October. Drying times are not documented.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • A natural pairing with Mavrica življenja: a party in 2022 climbed that first, abseiled, and went straight into Rdeča pentlja.
  • plezanje.net grade votes range from 5c to 6a+, so pitch 1 may feel easier than its grade to slab climbers.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Grade: first ascensionist 6a+; plezanje.net votes are 5c, 6a and 6a+, giving a consensus between 6a and 6a+. This entry uses 6a+.
  • The plezanje.net description is the first ascensionist's own text, so pitch details come from one original source. A separate 2022 club report confirms the route is repeated and calls it a nice route.
