Barousse (Central Pyrenees)

France

The Barousse is a quiet wooded valley in the foothills of the central Pyrenees, in the Hautes-Pyrénées south of Saint-Bertrand-de-Comminges. Above the village of Mauléon-Barousse a limestone spur called the Pilier des Sources carries a couple of easy multipitch routes bolted since 2022, with a base at only about 600 m. The rock is rough, sculpted limestone. It is a low, sheltered venue for spring and autumn, or for days when the high mountains are out of condition. Ticks are reported in early summer.

Princetza d'Euskadi

A short, friendly pillar of wonderfully rough, sculpted limestone above a Pyrenean village, bolted in 2022 as a first multipitch. Five pitches of grade 3 and 4 with single moves of 5a (4c obligatory), fifteen minutes from the car. Ideal for learning rope work; experienced parties move together and are up in an hour.
