Multipitch Atlas

Bolzano & South Tyrol

Italy

The red porphyry walls around Bolzano (Bozen) hold a handful of modern, low-altitude plaisir multipitches that are climbable for much of the year. The Noafer Bichl at Glaning, on the slope of Jenesien above the city, has several bolted routes of six to eight pitches that end near the Gasthof Noafer; the Seitner Wände above the Haselburg on the south side of town are mostly a trad crack venue with one fully bolted line. Bolzano is on the Brenner railway and the A22 motorway. The walls face south to south-east or sit low in the valley, so spring and autumn are best and summer is hot.

Sonntagsspaziergang

The easy classic of the Noafer Bichl: slabs, a neat corner and two pitches up a pocketed pillar edge, with Bolzano below and the Dolomites on the horizon. Grade 4 climbing throughout, but with some long gaps between bolts on the easy ground.

Il Cielo sopra Bolzano

Steep crack, corner and chimney climbing on porphyry, fully bolted in the middle of a trad crag. Sustained at 6a to 6b with a technical 6b+ first pitch. It stays in the shade until mid-afternoon, which makes it a summer option.
