Wings for Life

Telendos South Face (right of the Sleeping Princess cave) · Kalymnos & Telendos · Greece

Bail with caveatsBolting confidence: high

The first route on the wall (Odermatt and Keller, 2008), climbing a long, exposed line on sharp, grippy rock right of the huge roof. The lower pitches are easy for the grade. The two 6a cruxes are a short odd corner over a small roof and a traverse high up, and they come with big exposure. Pitches are short, so you can link them with long draws.

The route

Overview

The first route on the south face of Telendos: eleven short pitches up a ridge and then the wall above the Crescendo cave. Most of it is easy, well-featured climbing on very rough, sharp limestone, with the difficulty concentrated in two short 6a passages on pitches 7 and 9. The bolting is as close as a single-pitch crag, so it feels safe, but the top three pitches hang over the cave and are very exposed. You have to top out and walk back round the island, which makes it a full half-day or more. Some parties find it less sustained and less good than its neighbours Wild Country and Eterna.

Pitches of Wings for Life
PitchGradeLengthNotes
P15a20 mStart of the ridge. Like all of pitches 1 to 6, easy for the grade.
P25b30 mContinues up the ridge.
P35b10 mVery short pitch on the ridge.
P44b30 mEasy ground. The line wanders left and back right around here, which creates rope drag if you link.
P54c20 mEasy ridge climbing.
P65b20 mLeads to the foot of the steeper wall. Hanging belay.
P76a30 mFirst crux: a short, odd, physical corner of about 3 m pulling over a small roof. More intimidating than technical, but one 2021 party thought the move nearer 6b. It can be pulled through on the bolts. Planetmountain grades this pitch 5c.
P85b20 mMore technical wall climbing. Hanging belay.
P96a20 mSecond crux, a traverse. Fairly graded, and also possible with a pull on a bolt. Hanging belay. Planetmountain grades this pitch 5c.
P105b20 mVery exposed above the Crescendo cave. The climbing eases but the rock gets sharper. Hanging belay.
P115a30 mEasy finish on superb sharp rock to the plateau.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

Base yourself in Masouri or Myrties on Kalymnos. Small ferries cross from Myrties to Telendos about every half hour until around midnight (camptocamp). Mountain Project (2013 note) put the first boat at 07:00. You can also arrange a direct boat drop below the south face: Mountain Project quoted about 10 euros a head in 2013, a 2023 camptocamp party paid 20 euros each. Agree the price and the pick-up with the boatman beforehand.

On foot · about 60 min

From Telendos harbour follow the seafront for about 100 m, then before the end of the village take an alley that climbs away from the shore and crosses towards Hochlakas beach. Above the beach take the obvious path on the right, go through a gate (Mountain Project calls it the goat gate) and follow the blue-marked path along the coast. Continue until you are below the Crescendo cave, then leave the path and walk up as for the Crescendo sector. The route starts just right of Crescendo, taking the ridge on the right at the first opportunity (Mountain Project). Planetmountain places it about 250 m right of Wild Country. Allow 45 min to 1 h from the harbour (camptocamp gives 1 h for the neighbouring route; a 2021 party took 45 min; planetmountain's longer walk-in via the Crystal Cave trail is quoted at 1.5 h). From a boat drop below the face it is about 20 min uphill, with marks on the stones (2014 report).

Getting down

Descent

Walk off. From the top head north across the plateau, following cairns, to the white chapel of St Constantine (Agios Konstantinos). From the chapel follow the path, marked with small blue dots, down the north side to the coastal path and follow that back round to Telendos village. It is the same descent as Wild Country, for which camptocamp gives 1.5 to 2 h. Planetmountain warns that it can take anything from 1 h to an all-night epic if you lose the line, so do not top out late. The belays have rings and camptocamp says abseiling from them is possible, but no source gives abseil lengths and the lower part wanders, so treat that as a retreat option only.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail with caveats

Abseiling off is possible but nobody describes doing it. Camptocamp says the belays are two bolts with rings and that abseiling from them is possible, and the pitches are short. The lower ridge wanders, the top pitches include a traverse and hang over the Crescendo cave, and no source gives abseil lengths. Treat it as an emergency option and expect to top out.

Retreat from
Any belay in principle, since all are reported as ring belays. Retreat is most plausible from the lower six pitches on the ridge, which are easy and short, though the line moves left and right around pitch 4.
Point of no return
Not stated as such. By inference, the traverse on pitch 9 and the very exposed pitch 10 above the cave make abseiling back down the line doubtful from there, and with one or two easy pitches left, going up is the practical way off.
Carry
The single 60 m rope used for the climb gives 30 m abseils; pitches are reported as 20 to 25 m in practice, so this should reach belay to belay (inference, since Mountain Project lists three pitches at 30 m). A maillon or two in case a ring is missing.
Basis
Part stated, part inferredCamptocamp states that the belays are two bolts with rings and that abseiling is possible, and the guide notes there is no easy retreat from high on the route; the reach of a 60 m rope and the point of no return are inferred from reported pitch lengths, the pitch 9 traverse and the position over the cave.

Safety

Hazards

  • Before the winter 2015/16 rebolt, planetmountain reported that the bolts on this route were considered dangerous and asked climbers to stay off it. All later reports (2019, 2021) describe very close, good bolting. Make sure any topo or report you rely on post-dates the rebolt.
  • No easy retreat from high on the route: you are expected to top out, and the walk-off across the plateau is long and easy to lose. Carry a headtorch and water.
  • Hanging belays at the top of pitches 6, 8, 9 and 10 (Mountain Project).
  • The rock is extremely sharp, particularly on the last pitches.
  • Goats on the face can knock stones down, especially near the start (noted on Mountain Project for the neighbouring Rita Telendos).
  • All rescue on Kalymnos and Telendos is volunteer-run and there is no state helicopter medical service (ExplorersWeb, April 2026). Treat a walk-off route on a remote face accordingly.

Sun and weather

Conditions

South-facing and in full sun for most of the day. The neighbouring Wild Country is reported in shade until about 10:30 to 11:00, and thecrag gives 11:00 for the face, so start early. Spring and autumn are the sensible seasons; a September party on the same face found it extremely hot. A late-November ascent was reported in good conditions. Expect other parties.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Pitches are short, usually about 20 m and never more than 25 m according to a 2021 party. With a 60 m rope and by skipping bolts you can climb it in about 5 pitches. A 2021 team linked everything except the two 6a pitches and the 5b between them.
  • Use long draws and skip bolts on the easy ground to control drag where the line wanders around pitch 4.
  • Climbing time for a competent pair was 2 h 10 min (2021) to 2.5 h (2014).
  • A boat drop saves most of the approach walk.
  • Mountain Project notes pitches 8 and 9 can also be linked.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Maximum grade: camptocamp, Mountain Project, SummitPost and Explore-Share give 6a; planetmountain gives 5c for both crux pitches; one 2021 camptocamp party felt the pitch 7 move was nearer 6b. This entry uses 6a.
  • Pitch count: all sources say 11, but the camptocamp table lists only 10 rows (it omits one of the early 5b pitches) and Mountain Project's header says 9 while its description lists 11. This entry follows Mountain Project's 11-pitch list.
  • Length: 250 m (camptocamp, Mountain Project, Explore-Share) against 220 m (planetmountain route page). Mountain Project's pitch lengths add up to 250 m, but a 2021 party found every pitch under 25 m, so the true climbing length is probably nearer the lower figure.
  • Belay comfort: a 2014 camptocamp report calls the belays comfortable; Mountain Project lists four hanging belays high on the route.
  • The planetmountain, SummitPost, UKC and thecrag pages could not be read in full; facts attributed to them come from search summaries only.

Wild Country

A sustained, varied line on sculpted limestone. It starts with an easy slab and builds to slightly overhanging jugs with huge exposure on the top pitch. Mountain Project and camptocamp grade the crux 6a+ (Rockfax says 6a). With a 70 m rope you can link several pairs of pitches.

Bucce d'Arancia

This is the most-climbed route on the Paretone. It gives sustained, varied slab and crack climbing on good gneiss, and the hardest moves are a fine crack on P2, a slanting corner and a punchy wall. Queues are common on good days. The Mani Nude guidebook grades it stiffly; camptocamp's Italian page calls it sustained at 5b–5c+ with a single 6a.
