König der Löwen

Treffauer – north face plinth (Schneekar) · Wilder Kaiser · Austria

Bail not documentedBolting confidence: high

Nine pitches of easy slabs and water runnels beside the Treffauer normal route, UIAA 5 at most if you take the easy variant on pitch 4. Lots of bolts and friendly ground make it one of the most popular routes in the Schneekar. The rock is not solid everywhere and the walk-in is two hours.

The route

Overview

König der Löwen climbs the plinth of the Treffauer north face at the start of the Schneekar, right beside the mountain's normal route. bergsteigen.com sums up the recipe as a great many bolts, climber-friendly ground and low grades. The lower pitches are easy slabs; in the middle a small overhang gives a short passage of UIAA 5/5+ that can be avoided on the right at grade 4; the top has steeper passages and a chimney groove. The rock is not solid everywhere, but there are many good passages.

Getting there

Approach

To the parking

From Wörgl, Kufstein or St. Johann take the B178 to Scheffau, turn into the village and at Gasthof Maikircher go right towards the Jägerwirt. Park at the pay car park Wegscheid just below Gasthof Jägerwirt (about 880 m). By public transport: KaiserJet or Postbus to "Scheffau Dorf", then about 30 min on foot to the car park.

On foot · about 120 min

About 2 h. From the car park climb towards the Treffauer on path 826 past the Wegscheid-Niederalm and Hochalm to the junction with the Wilder-Kaiser-Steig. Continue north, passing right of a small waterfall, then up through dwarf pine to the start of the Schneekar. Where the Treffauer normal route leaves the cirque to the right, go a few metres further along the wall to the start, marked by a thread with a lion on it, at about 1705 m.

Getting down

Descent

On foot. From the end of the route traverse horizontally to the Treffauer normal route, which is clearly visible, and descend it to the start. Then go down the approach path to the car park. bergsteigen.com gives 1 h 45, Climbers Paradise 2 h 30.

Retreat

Bailing off the route

Bail not documented

Retreat is not documented. The descent is on foot and neither source says whether the belays are rigged for abseiling. The route runs close to the Treffauer normal route, which may offer a way off, but no source describes one.

Maillons and cord in case you must abseil from bolted belays; the longest pitches are 40 to 45 m, more than half a 60 m rope.

Safety

Hazards

  • Chamois and other climbers can send stones down the route; wear a helmet.
  • With spring snow the descent lies in an avalanche zone.
  • The rock is not solid everywhere.
  • The descent uses the Treffauer normal route, which is alpine terrain.

Sun and weather

Conditions

North to north-west facing, 1700 to 1950 m, so the route only gets sun in the afternoon. Season June to October. In spring with snow on the ground the descent crosses a dangerous avalanche zone, including wet-snow slides.

Worth knowing

Tips

  • Allow about 2 h 30 to 3 h on the route and close to 7 h car to car.
  • Via Max starts 50 m to the left if you want a harder second route in the same cirque.
  • The Jägerwirt at the car park and the Wegscheidalm on the approach are the obvious stops.

Open questions

Where sources disagree

  • Grade: bergsteigen.com gives UIAA 5+ (4+ obligatory) because it counts the direct line on pitch 4; Climbers Paradise gives 5, with the pitch-4 direct as a "5+ variant". The card uses 5a, for the line with the easy variant.
  • Protection wording: the bergsteigen.com header says "very good" while its remark field says "well bolted".
  • Length: 280 m (bergsteigen.com) against 300 m (Climbers Paradise); the Climbers Paradise pitch lengths add up to 305 m.
  • Rope and quickdraws: 60 m and 11 (bergsteigen.com) against 50 m and 10 (Climbers Paradise).
  • Aspect: north (bergsteigen.com) against north-west (Climbers Paradise).

Panorama

The right-hand of the Jegihorn's three easy bolted routes and the quietest. Ten long pitches up low-angled slabs and then a steeper, airy central section on sharp flakes and edges, finishing along a short crest to the 3206 m summit. Bolts are further apart than on Alpendurst and the belays are unlinked, so it suits a leader who is steady at 4c.

Eight short pitches of 4b to 5a on compact, grippy gneiss slabs above the Wiwannihütte, finishing on a 2880 m summit. Pitches 3 and 4 climb a big steep slab that is the heart of the route. Chained belays and an abseil descent make it the gentlest introduction to the Wiwanni routes, though the starting pitches feel stiff for 4b.

Arista Mowgli

An easy granite ridge above the Bozuelo meadows, low-angled and never exposed. Two smooth friction slabs at 5a, on pitches 1 and 6, are the only real difficulties; the rest is steps and short walls at grade 3 to 4. Ideal for a first multipitch, and you can step off rightwards onto ledges almost anywhere.
